The pet industry is realizing impressive growth. Over the past 30 years, the percentage of pet owners has increased by double digits, and in the past year alone, 90 million pet-owning U.S. households spent $136 billion on their pets.

The good news for the pet grooming industry is that more than two-thirds of these homes are dog families — many with more than one dog in the house — and 95% of dog parents prioritize the well-being of their four-legged kids in the same way they care for any member of the family.

“Recession-Proof”

Unlike other markets, which tend to fluctuate with a changing economy, the pet industry has maintained consistent growth since the 1980s; this is due primarily to the steady increase in pet ownership. Far exceeding that growth is pet owner spending, particularly as it relates to matters of pet health and wellness.

It’s also interesting to note that currently, in the U.S., Generation X and millennials make up the vast majority of pet owners (more than 65%).

As a result, the APPA (American Pet Products Association) is projecting that the pet industry is expected to see continued growth, with no signs of a slowdown; and pet grooming is reported to be one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry.
